Contrary to popular belief, the common perception of the ACMP as a self-policing force for the Armor Corps did not come to be until reforms enacted much later. Originally the ACMP was created by the Armor Corps to police the civilian populations that had been reduced to lawlessness following the Two Week War. A separate, rear-echelon corps off the battlefield was needed to ensure order was maintained, and because of the way the Armor Corps of this period was organized, these individuals were without exception Pilots. As would be expected of Pilots, most MPs carried out their duties as heavy-handedly as possible, founding the ACMP's reputation as an inefficient and oppressive organization staffed by corrupt Pilots who viewed their primary mission as punishers rather than peacekeepers.

The first reformations to the ACMP occurred after the ACC encountered the Phoenix Collective, another large Pilot-oriented group outside the coalition's sphere of influence. The existence of PC came as quite a shock to the leadership at the time, and following ACC's decision to "tolerate" the organization, the Armor Corps reoriented the ACMP's mission from oppressing civilians to training to counter other Pilots, technically making the ACMP less a "police force" and more an "Anti-Pilot Task Force". However, this task force was created with an orientation towards external threats to Armor Corps leadership rather than for internal policing. ACMP did not become a proper police force until the writing of the Wellington Agreement which clarified the role of ACMP within the Armor Corps as a volunteer organization dedicated to policing its Pilots, and limited its jurisdiction to Armor Corps personnel only. While the ACMP still has problems with accepting volunteers more interested in attaining carte blanche to violently settle grudges with other AC Pilots than anything else, this is still seen as a significant improvement over the organization's previous incarnations.

Officially, the modern ACMP is considered a Constabulary, with its members referred to as Constables. As with its parent organization, there are Pilot and non-Pilot sides to the ACMP, both answering to a single internal chain of command. Post-Wellington Agreement, ACMP cannot render judgement, but instead is charged to carrying out punishments as determined by the Armor Corps or deemed suitable by Armor Corps' own set of laws of conduct. Chief among these duties are the interception and apprehension of Pilots charged with dereliction of duty or desertion, or otherwise carrying out their duties in a way deemed overly harmful to the Armor Corps and the Armor Corps Coalition. ACMP handles the imprisonment and, in some cases execution of Armor Corps Pilots. Additionally, ACMPs may serve security personnel and perform enforcement duties for coalition member organizations that lack similar outfits of their own (namely the Green Initiative and the Green Initiative Medical Division).
